Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) is a crater lake situated in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius. It is about 1800 feet above sea level. The first group of pilgrims who went to Ganga Talao was from the village of Triolet and it was led by Pandit Giri Gossayne from Terre Rouge in 1898.

It is considered as most sacred Hindu Place in Mauritius.

The Sagar Shiv Mandir is located on the bank of the lake and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are temples dedicated to other Gods including Lord Hanuman, Goddess Ganga, and Lord Ganesh along the Grand Bassin. During Shivaratri, many pilgrims in Mauritius walk bare feet from their homes to the lake.

It’s traditional for pilgrims to walk in bare feet to the lake, where they can pray in the temples dedicated to Hindu gods and drink its holy waters. A 108-ft tall statue of Shiva is a major sight.

See Seven Colored Earth

The Seven Coloured Earths are a geological formation and prominent tourist attraction found in the Chamarel plain of the Rivière Noire District in south-western Mauritius. It is a relatively small area of sand dunes comprising sand of seven distinct colours (approximately red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow). The main feature of the place is that since these differently coloured sands spontaneously settle in different layers, dunes acquire a surrealistic, striped colouring. Another interesting feature of Chamarel’s Coloured Earths is that the dunes seemingly never erode, in spite of Mauritius’ torrential tropical rains. Since the earth was first exposed, rains have carved beautiful patterns into the hillside, creating an effect of earthen meringue.
